305 Task D Short answer questions

Di  Explain what is meant by the term “active participation”.
Active participation is an approach that enables individuals to be included in their care and have a greater say in how they live their life in ways that matter to them.
The benefits of active participation can be divided into primary benefits and secondary benefits.
It is an approach that empowers individuals in the activities and relationships of everyday life leading to them living as independently as possible. The importance to the individual as an active partner in their own care or support is that it brings physical, psychological, relational and over all wellbeing benefits. - See more at:

Dii  Explain how active participation can support all aspects of an individual’s preferences and needs.

  1. Physical benefits including greater activity levels.
  2. Increased independence and autonomy in what people do.
  3. An opportunity for individuals in health and social care settings to have a say in matters of direct concern to their lives.
  4. Increased opportunities for social contact and interpersonal relationships.
  5. Encouraging involvement and self-awareness.  Individuals become more involved in the community and more aware of opportunities and what they can hope for themselves.
  6. Increased opportunities for learning and development of important skills, knowledge, education and employment.
  7. Enhanced well-being, with increases in self-confidence, self-esteem and self-belief.
The benefits of active participation include the above primary benefits where the individual gains from its application in the real world of health and social care practice, but there are also some secondary benefits.

Diii  Explain how to ensure everyone involved in an activity or event such as a review understands how to apply the principles of active participation.

Make everybody aware of the communication needs and preferences of the individual so there are no cummunication issues. Ensure people involved address the individual directly and ask them questions and give them time to respond and express their thoughts, feelings, opinions, needs wishes and preferences. If conflicts of opinion arise ensure everybody including the individual works together to find a suitable compromise everybody is happy with.

Div  Give two ways that a risk assessment can support the right of an individual using the service to take risks and make choices.

They identify the potential benefits and balance these against the potential danger or harm and identify how the danger or harm can be reduced so by doing a risk assessment you are allowing the individual to take part in what they choose but ensuring it is done in the safest way possible.
They allow a small element of risk to occur so the individual is able to feel more independent and has more control over what they do, helping to increase self esteem because they are able to take risks as everybody does in everyday life.

Dv  Explain how the responsibilities of all concerned with the care of an individual can be supported by a risk assessment.

Risk assessment ensure that the risks have been identified and actions put in place to reduce them so everybody knows what they need to do. They identify who is responsible for the actions e.g the individual is responsible if they choose to self medicate. Risk assessments encourage individuals to make choices and take some control because they have been informed of the risks. Risk assessments identify where support is needed so everybody involved knows how to support the individual.

Dvi  Describe two different uses of risk assessment in adult social care settings.

Identifies benefits against possible harm
Changing needs and preferences are met and identified in new assessment.

Dvii  Give three reasons why risk assessments designed to support choice and active participation need to be reviewed and updated regularly.

1 - Change in a person's disability/illness
2 - A change in a person's preferences, wishes and needs, ensuring these are identified.
3 – Change in Support Package
