305 Task C Case Studies
Read the following case studies. You may either carry out a role play or write an account covering the points below.
Case Study 1
You are a senior social care worker and have been asked to mentor a colleague who is finding it difficult to understand the importance of obtaining consent from individuals receiving a service.
In the role play or written account, you must:
Ci Describe the different factors that might affect an individual’s ability to express their view.
Factors such as one's self esteem, location (one might not express atheist beliefs in a church), if they have a speech impediment, understanding of the topic and possibly nerves would all affect your ability to express your opinion
Cii Explain different ways of gaining consent to activities or actions.
verbally, like explaining what you asking for consent to and why,
in writing requiring a written response, for example permission/acceptance/refusal .Sometimes a formal response is required but at other times a nod is all that is needed.
Ciii Explain what to do if the social care worker cannot gain consent or is unsure of the response.
Try a different approach such as asking a relative or a senior member of staff or if all these options are not available refer to mental capacity act. But never carry out anything if there is no consent.
Case Study 2
You are later asked to speak to another social care worker who has had difficulties helping an individual using the service to make choices and to challenge decisions they don’t agree with. There is a suspicion that the social care worker has also been trying to impose their own views on the individual.
In the role play or written account, you must:
Civ Describe a range of approaches to help individuals make informed choices.
Can be creating flash cards and other communication aids to help a person to understand the questions t is all about furnishing them with all the facts so they can make an informed choice.
Cv Describe different ways to help an individual challenge decisions made by others (such as medical practitioners, social care workers and family members.)
is to knowing key working skills, ensuring the service user understands letters or appointments accompanying them to appointments where you have gained permission to do so. Always make things clear as you go along to make sure you don’t confuse or mislead anyone and always respect their wishes in their best interest.
Cvi Explain the possible consequences if the personal views of others (such as medical practitioners, social care workers and family members) are allowed to influence the choices an individual makes.
